Grades 3/4 - 5

May 23, 2019

It's been a while since I've updated this group - I'm sorry about that. We're all done with our dance presentations and have since started recorder.

We've been focusing on two songs which we will be performing for Spring Symphony (set to take place on Thursday, June 13). Students all had the opportunity to audition for a solo part on both singing and recorder and all classes will have found out the results of that audition by the end of this week. I am so proud of all the students who had the courage to try... as I tell them every year, I wouldn't have had the guts to even think about doing it when I was their age! Over the next few weeks we will continue to work on our acts for Spring Symphony - hopefully getting together with the other classes when they're able to join us.

Please encourage your child to practice their two songs.

A note will be going home eventually, however here's a heads up... students will be asked to wear white tops and black bottoms for the concert. You don't have to spend any money. As dark as you have and as plain white as you have will suffice. (Shirts can always be turned inside out or backwards if necessary)

March 20, 2019

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great March break!

As you can see from the post below, classes have either finished the Notation unit and started term two dance, or are almost finished Notation and will start dance soon.

Notes went home on Monday regarding recorders which we will be starting after dance and doing for most of the rest of the year. As I would like to only pay for shipping once, I would like to purchase all the books and recorders needed on one order. I would like to buy them next week, so please, if you're planning on purchasing a book and/or recorder and haven't done it yet, please do it ASAP.

As performances dates for dance assignments are decided, as always they will be posted on the blog, so keep checking!

All classes are well into the Notation unit. We are all doing our best to try to finish the unit before March break. If we need time after March break, we will finish this unit before we start dance. Here's the rough plan:

3/4 Malka: March 1 - review accidentals, last assignment
                 March 6 - review
March 8 - test (if you won't be here and would like to write the test earlier, please let me know!)

4 Baynes: March 1 - begin accidentals, last assignment, review
March 5 - test (the whole class wanted it early)

4/5 Roebuck:  March 4 - last class treble clef
March 6 - leger lines for grade 5's (grade 4's were away)
                       March 18 - accidentals
                       March 20 - review
                       March 25 - test

5 Gerston: March 5 - continue to work on treble clef - possibly begin accidentals
                  March 6 - begin/continue accidentals
                  March 19 - leger lines
                  March 20 - review
                  March 26 - test

February 19, 2019

All classes have finished with their "Plickers" test. Most students did well. Any student who was away, or performed less than satisfactory will be given a hard copy of the plickers test (just in case mistakes were made due to scanning problems or not understanding which letter to hold up)

We are now moving on to our ever-important Notation unit - reading and writing notes. This unit is an easier one, and will move quite quickly. I expect it to be finished before we go away for March break. When we come back from March break, we will be doing our term two dance unit, followed by recorders until almost the end of the year. The recorder letter will most likely go home after March break.

February 8, 2019

I've discussed with most classes the possibility of using our "Plickers" review game as the test. Students were very open to this idea. Students should be studying the material. If everything goes well with Plickers, we may not have to have the written test. If students don't do well with the game, I will give them the written test as an alternate way of demonstrating what they have learned.

Each class will still have a "Jeopardy" review game before their "Plickers" day.

Plickers day will be the following:
Malka: February 14, 2019 (*changed due to inclement weather day on February 12)
Baynes:  February 11, 2019
Roebuck: February 15, 2019

Gerston: February 19, 2019

January 28, 2019

Students have been working hard on the Beats and Rhythm unit. Most students are finished or almost finished with the three assignments (Musical Math, Duration and Counting Rhythms). Once we're done with the last assignment, there will be a class or two on some musical terms (with lots of listening examples) followed by at least one review class and a test. Below are the dates that I'm estimating the test will take place on:

Malka: February 14, 2019 (*changed due to inclement weather day on February 12)
Baynes:  February 14, 2019
Roebuck: February 15, 2019
Gerston: February 19, 2019

January 10, 2019

Welcome back everyone! I hope you had a wonderful/restful/exciting break!

This week, we have moved on to a new assignment called "Duration". Students are using the various notes and rests that they have learned to write their own music. They had part of the first class to work on it, and will have most of our next class to finish it. I'm hoping that two classes will be enough time for everyone to finish.

As always, students who are struggling with any of the concepts, are encouraged to come in at recess for extra help.

December 6, 2018

Most of our dance units are wrapping up. As you can see below, all presentation dates have already taken place. Now we're just finishing the presentations for students who were away on their day.

In the meantime, we are heading back to our unit on Beats and Rhythm. Students were given a study sheet a month ago (see the post from November 8th). Students have been asked to be very familiar with the notes and rests on their chart. Not only will they need it to complete the work for this unit, it will (of course,) be on the test. In addition, they will need to understand these notes for when we play recorders later in the year. Understanding these notes and rests will help them be successful in my class until they leave this school.

As always, if students need any help, they are encouraged to come to me at recess.

November 8, 2018

This message is for the grade 5's...

We've all started our dance unit. Grade 5 choreographers are reminded that they are to come prepared with ideas for the first part of their stories so that class time will be used wisely. See me if you need an extra copy of the story.

November 8, 2018

As students have been informed, the next unit for music is a challenging one. Study sheets are going home today to help students review the notes and rests that they are expected to know - up to, and including their grade.

We will be doing our dance unit for the next little while. It would be great if students could be familiar with the study sheet for when we continue with our Beats and Rhythm unit in December.

As always, I'm available for extra help.

Now that our written tests are done (or will be by the end of the day today), we are talking about when our singing tests will be. Please find the date below.

5 Gerston: October 26
4/5 Roebuck: November 6 (students who are willing, can present on November 1)
4 Baynes: October 29
3/4 Malka: November 5 (students who are willing, can present on November 1)

Remember... the performance test is paired with the Dynamics and Expression unit, so please make sure you're singing at the correct volume.

As discussed in class, should you wish to do your performance test in private, please come to the music room before or after school or at recess BEFORE your test date.

Most classes are nearing the end of the information section of the Dynamics and Expression unit. There will be a performance test as well as a written test. All dates will be discussed with each class and voted on. I will post the dates on this page as they are decided. This is just a warning that the tests are coming, so students should start reviewing.

September 17, 2018

All classes are well underway with our Dynamics unit. Students who aren't understanding the information taught in class are encouraged to review their notes at home. They are also welcome to come in and get extra help.

We have already started learning one of the songs that we will be performing for our Spring Symphony this year. Students will have a singing test on this song. Dates will be posted once the classes have decided on the dates. We will also be adding recorder to these songs (once we start our recorder unit in May), so if students would like a copy of the music now to start practicing, let me know!
