Band Kids

May 31, 2019

This is it! One more rehearsal to go! Next Friday, June 7th we will have our last rehearsal before the Spring Symphony. We'll do another run through - probably twice. Remember to watch for cues after fermatas, and please try to listen/watch for our accelerando in MK.

I forgot to ask everyone to check their names on the program, so next time you have class with me, if you could please make sure that your name is
    1) there
    2) it's correct
    3) it's in the right spot
that would be great. Just cross your name off once you've checked it. If there's something wrong, circle it and write the correction in clearly.

Ms. Koshy and I are planning on staying late on Wednesday, June 12 to set up for Spring Symphony, so if anyone wants to stay and help, that would be very much appreciated. We need to get all the percussion instruments and stands downstairs, as well as decorate the gym, and set marks on the floor for the stage crew.

Crunch time! Great job on Ding Dong today! I think we should be able to add that one to the programme!

Next time we'll run through everything in the order that we will play things at Spring Symphony. (Including bowing and hopefully speeches - assuming that I can get the script done in time)

Two more to go! (I sound like Richard Simmons!)

It seems that with the warmer weather, we're missing more and more faces. Please make every effort to attend the next four practices. We're almost done, and it's crunch time! That being said, I think we sounded great today! (Although, it would certainly be a fuller sound with all our members present...) FOUR rehearsals left!

     Seafarer's Hymn: RT

     Mountain Kingtransition to 50

     Rainbow: timpani at end

We're Off to See the Wizard: 61-65

     Concerto: RT

      Ding Dong: 25 - end

The next practice will take place on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 (yes, I know it's track and field for the juniors, but it shouldn't overlap)

Band practice will be cancelled this Wednesday, as I will be away at an eco event. I apologize for the short notice. Our next rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, May 8.

Well, we finally had our guest performer come and rehearse with us, and I think it's going to be a blast! Many students had to leave early today because of Gauss, eco events, basketball practice and other such reasons. Since we were missing so many faces, I think it's best that we practice the same stuff that we were going to rehearse today... 6 rehearsals to go!

     Seafarer's Hymn: RT

     Mountain Kingtransition to 50

Rainbow: bar 8, section at bar 17-21

We're Off to See the Wizard: bar 57

     Concerto: RT

Ding Dong: Try it if there's time

The next practice will take place on Wednesday, May 1, 2019

I just got a notice that there is a meeting on Monday at lunch. I'm sorry, but band will have to be cancelled this week. We will hopefully continue our practice on April 24th.

April 8, 2019

I think things are starting to come together, and we're sounding pretty good! We have eight rehearsals left (assuming that none of them get cancelled), which should leave us plenty of time to sort out the challenging areas.

Thank you so much to those of you who are showing up on a regular basis. I know it's hard - especially when the weather turns beautiful, but you did make a commitment when you signed up, as I did when I started the group. Please make every effort to come to practice. It is only one day a week, for one recess. You are part of a team, and every player counts!

On Monday, we will be working on:

     Seafarer's Hymn: RT

     Mountain Kingtransition to 50

Rainbow: bar 8, section at bar 17-21

We're Off to See the Wizard: bar 57

     Concerto: Guest performer (if possible)

Ding Dong: Try it if there's time

As always, thank you to the students who set up, as well as those who stayed to help put all the chairs and stands away. Your help and dedication is truly appreciated.

Our next practice will be on Monday, April 15.

I'm so sorry for the late post... I know I usually give you almost a week to review. Things have been so busy. You know how it goes... I am also sorry that our guest performer was unable to make it last rehearsal. Hopefully we'll be able to work something out soon.

On Monday, we will be working on:

     Seafarer's Hymn: RT

     Mountain KingRT

Rainbow: last two bars, (with a run through)

We're Off to See the Wizard: 45-49

     Concerto: RT

As always, thank you to the students who set up, as well as those who stayed to help put all the chairs and stands away. Your help and dedication is truly appreciated.

Our next practice will be on Monday, April 8

By the way, did you enjoy that "new song" I gave you for April fools?

March 26, 2019

It's that time of year again.... when the snow starts to melt, and students stop coming to the music room at recess simply so that they can avoid going out in the cold (hopefully they are also coming because they enjoy the added bonus of practicing their instruments) Please remember that you have made a commitment to the band, and if you are at school, it is expected that you be at band practice.

Once again, t
here were a few key people away last week, so you may notice that some of the parts we're rehearsing is the same...

Our guest performer is supposed to be joining us next rehearsal, so whenever she shows up, that's when we'll work on her piece.

     Seafarer's Hymn: RT

     Mountain KingRT

Rainbow: last two bars, (with a run through)

We're Off to See the Wizard: 33-41 if the kids who were away are back(I know we did this yesterday, but with so many key players away, I think it's best we work on it again...)
                     - bars 49-56 if they're not back (with a run through)

     Concerto: Guest performer...

As always, thank you to the students who set up, as well as those who stayed to help put all the chairs and stands away. Your help and dedication is truly appreciated.

Our next practice will be on Monday, April 1st. (no kidding)

March 18, 2019

Welcome back! I hope you all had a great break! I don't know about you, but I felt a little rusty today... Thank you to Ms. Rubinoff's class, who helped set up the chairs, and to all band kids who helped stack them at the end of the rehearsal. I know it isn't easy, but if there are a few kids who would like to volunteer to run the "clean up" that would be great.... I can offer puzzle pieces along with my undying gratitude...

Next rehearsal I would like to focus on:

Seafarer's Hymn: the transition from bars 7-11

     Mountain King: - bars 48 -49
                                - RT

Rainbow: the shots at bar 25 - we were a little off today, (with a run through)

We're Off to See the Wizard: 33-41 (with a run through) (I know we did this today, but with so many key players away, I think it's best we work on it again...)

Concerto: RT - cut offs (since we didn't get to it today...)

Our next practice will be on Monday, March 25th. (What a way to start the week!)

March 5, 2019

Great work yesterday! I can't believe that we got through everything and managed to take the picture for yearbook! I know that we're starting our term two dance units upon our return from March break, but the proverbial band will march on... (we're not actually going to be marching). If anyone is able to come early and help set up the chairs that would be great! Please be prepared to help stack all the chairs at then end of rehearsal. We will need our dance room back...

Next rehearsal I would like to focus on:

Seafarer's Hymn: the small ensemble section at 26

Mountain King: - the B section melody (flutes, clarinets, sax - bar 38-42)
                                - R.T. the A section melody (flutes, clarinets, trumpets - bar 50-53, alto sax bar 26-29, bass clarinet, tenor sax, baritone bar 2-5)
                              -  run through (RT) bars 58 - end

Rainbow: bars 29-30, (with a run through)

We're Off to See the Wizard: 33-41 (with a run through)

     Concerto: RT - cut offs

Our next practice will be on Monday, March 18th. (What a way to start the week!)

We're starting to sound pretty good! The songs are coming together nicely. Thank you so much to the students who continue to come in early to help set up, and stay late to help clean up. It is very much appreciated!

Next rehearsal I would like to focus on:

Seafarer's Hymn: as per the request of the clarinets, we will look at the last 3 bars
                                   - R.T.

Mountain King: - the A section melody (flutes, clarinets, trumpets - bar 50-53, alto sax bar 26-29, bass clarinet, tenor sax, baritone bar 2-5)
                              -  run through (RT) bars 58 - end

Our next practice will be on Monday, March 4th. (What a way to start the week!)

February 15, 2019

I'll keep this short and sweet as it's almost 5:00 on the Friday before the long weekend, and I'm still at school. (I promised my kids I'd take them out to dinner to celebrate their report cards...)

Next rehearsal I want to focus on:

Seafarer's Hymn: try small groupings - two clarinets, two flutes, one alto and cabasa

Mountain King: focus on the second bar of your melody (flutes, clarinets, trumpets - bar 51, alto sax bar 27, bass clarinet, tenor sax, baritone bar 3)
                              -  run through (RT) bars 58 - end

Rainbow: bars 13-16, (with a run through since we're all sight reading anyway)

We're Off to See the Wizard: add the pause in bar 17 (with a run from 1-25)

     Concerto: contrast

Thank you to the students who stayed and stacked all the extra chairs. Your help is truly appreciated.

Our next practice will be on Monday, February 25th. (What a way to start the week!)

February 8, 2019

Boy, do I love band! It's only the second rehearsal and things are already starting to sound good! I mean.... there's still a bunch of work to do, but it's nice when things start to come together.

Next rehearsal I want to focus on:

Seafarer's Hymn: dynamics in bars 1-10 (with a run through, because it sounded pretty good)

Mountain King: bars 58 - end

Rainbow: bars 9-13, (with a run through since we're all sight reading anyway)

We're Off to See the Wizard: bars 16 - 25 (with a run from 1-25)

Concerto: more dynamics - focusing on bars 24, 48-49

Thank you to the students who stayed and stacked all the extra chairs. Your help is truly appreciated.

Our next practice will be on Friday, February 15th. (Again, I find it a most excellent way to end the week!)

January 31, 2019

Hey Everyone! I hope you had as much fun at our first rehearsal as I did! I always enjoy doing band, because it's usually made up of kids that really want to be there (which is always a pleasure to teach). I thought we sounded pretty good for our first try! Don't worry if you were completely lost... things are going to go a bit slower from here on in. Remember, if you're in grade 7 or 8, this is a great opportunity to take on a role of leadership within the classroom and help out the younger students that might be feeling a bit overwhelmed. (*cough cough, Bakersfield Kind.... cough, cough... puzzle pieces...) If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed, don't hesitate to ask the person sitting next to you for some help. (Or me, but at an appropriate time, please... I'm usually fairly busy during band practice.)

Anyway, next week here's what I'm going to try to focus on:

Seafarer's Hymn: bars 1-4 (with a run through, because it sounded pretty good)

Mountain King: bars 66-end

Rainbow: bars 5-8, (with a run through since we're all sight reading anyway)

We're Off to See the Wizard: bars 1 - 15

Concerto: adding dynamics

Thank you to the students who stayed and stacked all the extra chairs. Your help is truly appreciated.

Our next practice will be on Friday, February 8th. (What a great way to end the week!)

January 7, 2019

Our first official band practice of the year will be on Thursday, January 31.

We will rehearse on Day 3's at lunch.

We're going to start off with the Bb concert scale, and then try to sight-read our way through all the pieces.

The music has been ready since last June... please see me if you need music and haven't received it yet.
